Here are 3 tips to leadership excellence:
- STAY WITHIN YOUR SUITE OF STRENGTHS:
If you haven’t participated in a strength analysis as a leader, you need to as soon as you can. If you as a leader spend 70% of your time working in your areas of strength, you increase your level of happiness. When you are happy, the likelihood of happiness increases for those you lead will go up exponentially. When those you lead have increases in happiness, so do your clients.
2. CREATE, DEFEND, AND PROTECT A SAFE CULTURE:
When employees feel safe and cared for, it goes a long way. As a leader, you need to create an environment where people can feel safe to create, challenge, innovate, and contribute.
More importantly, they need to feel safe in attempts to accomplish that have different outcomes than expected (…. put another way…. they need to be okay failing while trying!!!). Once you have created this culture and modeled the acceptance of it…. DEFEND IT AND PROTECT IT WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT! That too…. goes a long way with those you lead.
3. CREATE OWNERSHIP WITHIN THOSE YOU LEAD:
The best way to create ownership of outcomes within those that you lead is to let those you lead create how the outcomes will take place themselves. Share from your experience what is important to accomplish…..important to the company, important to you as the leader, and important to the clients. Ask those being lead why it is important to them and listen to understand. Allow them to create path toward the desired outcome even if it is not the way you would do it. This gives you a chance to DEFEND the culture you hope for when things don’t go the way you plan the first time. Learn from what happened and move forward to advance further. Those you lead will not easily leave that type of leader and that type of culture.
We all lead somewhere within our lives. We all have the chance to lead each day from our own space, and with those we influence.
The struggle comes when we don’t awaken to the fact that we are in leadership motion every day in many aspects of our personal and professional lives. We compartmentalize. Compartmentalization of experience is a self-limitation. (FOR MORE IN DEPTH ON THAT, CLICK THIS LINK FOR A SHORT LISTEN).
If you want to cast a wider net and yield top revenue, profit and customer satisfaction results, you are not alone.
The first step is coming to that realization, the second step is identifying the blind spots and backslides, and the final step is knowing what to do about them.
